Oregon Sports Journal featured a cover story about Bill’s work mentoring Portland State University’s men’s basketball. Entitled, “In Bill We Trust: One of America’s Top Legal Minds is also Portland State’s Biggest Fan,” the January 15, 2013 issue recognizes Bill’s work as Life Skills Coach. Bill draws on his own basketball days and his difficult upbringing and real-life scrapping “outsider” story to impact PSU players’ chance for success on the court, in the classroom, and out in the professional world.

2013 Barton Family SEAL Scholarship Recipients Announced
The Oregon Coast Community College Foundation has announced the names of ten 2012 recipients for the Serve, Earn and Learn (SEAL) Scholarships which support students’ academic success through financial support, work experience, campus service, and active instructor and staff mentorship. Recipients receive scholarship awards in exchange for valuable work and career experience gained through serving OCCC’s departments; practical experience in diverse setting like the nursing skills lab, science labs, facilities, and the library.
The scholarship is in its third year and was founded and endowed by Bill and Joann Barton through a $300,000 gift to the OCCC Foundation.

Brent Barton Engages Young Voters Through Oregon Bus Project
Brent served on the board of the Oregon Bus Project, a grass roots, non-partisan effort working to engage young people in the political process. He served on the board from 2006-2012, and in addition to providing leadership registered hundreds of young voters as a volunteer traveling the state on the bus and meeting Oregon’s next generation of voters and leaders face-to-face.

Fighting for the Rights and Welfare of Children
The Barton Law Firm fights to protect the rights of our most vulnerable citizens, including children. In the recent past we have:
- Provided financial assistance to the Lincoln County Olalla Center, a local mental health treatment facility for children.
- Financed one half of a two-year office lease for Lincoln County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and challenged other local businesses to match our pledge of support, thereby training more volunteers to serve more at-risk children in our community.
- Provided leadership to the American Association for Justice’s Child Sexual Abuse Litigation Group. Bill was co-founder of the group, and past Chairman.

Barton Firm Recognized by the Lincoln County Children’s Advocacy Center
The Barton Law Firm was recognized by the Lincoln County Children’s Advocacy Center for our volunteer efforts on behalf of children who have been physically or sexually abused. Over the years we have contributed $68,000 to aid the CAC in its efforts, as well as supported the cause of children’s welfare in our coastal community through children’s centers, court advocacy, and local and national law organizations.

With a commitment to social justice, community, and service, Bill and Brent provide legal aid and pro bono services—as well as countless volunteer hours—to various nonprofits in our Newport and Portland communities, and around the state.
- Bill serves on the Advisory Counsel for Lincoln County Legal Aid and is a past member of the Commission on Judicial Fitness and Disability.
- Brent has served on the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission and the Classroom Law Project; volunteers time for nonprofits like the Oregon Humane Society, and Clackamas Children’s Center; and has served on the boards of the Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theatre. He was also appointed to serve on the Willamette River Cleanup Authority’s commission.

Brent Barton Serves on Oregon Criminal Justice Commission
In 2009-10 Brent served on the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission, a governmental body seeking to implement evidence-based practices in Oregon criminal law. The commission provides a centralized and impartial forum for statewide policy development and planning with the aim of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of state and local criminal justice systems, and develops long-range public safety plans for state prisons, jails, and corrections programs.
